Jamaican singer Audrey Hall occupies a special corner of mid-80s rub-a-dub, her voice bringing a softness that slipped easily between lovers rock warmth and dancehall's emerging edge. These newly unearthed mixes, taken straight from Donovan Germain's original multitracks, feel like a small window opening back onto that era, the grain of the tape still sitting on the surface. 'Eight Little Notes' leads with Hall's calm, melodic phrasing, the rhythm section rolling beneath her with that unmistakable Germain looseness. Flip to 'Notes In Dub' and the track tilts into echo and negative space, bass thickened, drums stretched wider. It's a brief release, but nonetheless a crucial one - a reminder of how light and heavy rub-a-dub can be at once.
