Processed chimes ring out over whistling, humming drones and clanging metallic sounds on 'Kingdom of Lo', with vocal snatches arriving in breathy punctuations. The field recordings themselves are incredibly subtle; what we hear sounds as if it's been layered, manipulated and obscured, but we're still given a sense of place - there's a height and space to these recordings that captures a little of the region's majesty. And although it'd be easy to describe the collage of trance-inducing drones as meditative, there's almost too much going on for that - like Moniek Darge's timeless 'Sounds of Sacred Places', you're drawn into every small detail. 'Chasing the Demon' is even more raw and open; we can hear birds in the distance and the vastness of the space, with prayer wheels turning and flags blowing in the wind. There are no synthesized hums here, but Patti Smith's mesmerizing mantra is all we need. Massive recommendation.
