Rachmaninov's symphonies and piano concertos - with their expansove, surging melodies, their rich colours and their haunting air of melancholy - seem to capture the very essence of the Russian soul. The compose became an exile from his homeland, but for these recordings, made with Leningrad had once again become St.Petersburg, conductor Mariss Jansons returned to the orchestra with which he first learned his craft.
