The Italian jazz pianist Stefano Bollani is one of the outstanding talents of European jazz. An indispensable partner of the trumpeter Enrico Rava for over ten years, Bollani has also created a substantial body of original work as a leader in his own right, from solo recordings, duos (with Rava) and a traditional jazz trio to a complex suite for jazz piano and orchestra. This new recording by Bollani is yet again another new departure as it's based on a quintet of Italian musicians with whom he's been working with over many years and it demonstrates his great abilities both as performer and composer. 'I Visionari' is perhaps his most ambitious project to date. Always accessible and melodic, the borrows from west-coast jazz as well as cartoon music, Mingus and contemporary song-writing and the quintet is joined by prestigious guests (the violinist Mark Feldman, the trumpeter Paolo Fresu or the singer Petra Magoni) who spur the leader on to even greater achievements.
