Signed to David Byrne's world-music label, Peruvian singer Susana Baca mines her Afro-Peruvian heritage to create sparse, jazz-tinged soulful pop, and there's hardly a trace of the panpipes that have become an unfortunate cultural cliché of her country. Eco De Sombras, the follow-up to her self-titled 1995 debut, features Baca's subtle adaptations of poems and traditional songs.
