"Grits, Beans and Greens captures Tubby's astonishing fluency as a tenor-sax improviser, and canny craftsmanship as a composer. Rugged modal themes unfold over hurtling bass-walks (from the excellent Ron Mathewson) that suggest Coltrane’s Impressions or Giant Steps but with chirpy Latin-ballroom countermelodies. There are fast blues, and smoky ballads..." This 1969 recording was lost in the vaults until 2019 when it was finally found and given this rather spiffy release with extensive liner notes by Tubbs' expert Simon Spillett. Featuring musicians Ron Mathewson, Spike Wells, Mick Pyne & Tubby Hayes. Recorded at Philips studios, Stanhope Place, London. Tuesday June 24th 1969.
The original tapes were mastered using 1960’s bespoke Decca valve equalisation, Telefunken U73B valve limiters and cut on Haeco Scully lathe with Westrex RA1700 series amps and Westrex 3DII cutting head.
