"The Peach Orchard features some brilliant, intuitive, and perceptive ensemble free-playing by William Parker and his In Order to Survive Quartet. Parker, who has been featured on barn burners by the likes of Cecil Taylor and Charles Gayle, gets close at times on this album ("Thot," "In Order to Survive," and "Leaf Dance" are notable examples) but remains at least somewhat tied to the more post-bop roots of free playing. The Blue Note records of Andrew Hill come immediately to mind. Every member of the group is great, knowing when to step up and knowing when to keep in the background. Pianist Cooper-Moore's style owes as much to Schoenberg as it does to McCoy Tyner. Rob Brown's playing comes straight from the school of Jimmy Lyons: elliptical, unpredictable, yet calm. Susie Ibarra's kit sounds great here, her impressionistic drumming keeping Parker's whirling mass together. The Peach Orchard is definitely one of the highlights of the 1990s free jazz revival".
