Taken from the vaults of Columbia Records, this collection of the early music by Taj Mahal is a decent but far from comprehensive overview of his four decades of Blues. What it does contain is most of his best loved and prized material, culled mostly from the early to mid-'70s. The 19 cuts start strong with "Fishin' Blues" and "Leaving Trunk" and moves on to "Six Days on the Road," "Statesboro Blues" and "Farther on Down the Road" before going into some lesser known but still tasty material. There's a very small sampling of his calypso phase as on "Clara (St. Kitts Woman)." Because many of his original recordings have not been reissued on CD, this is a good primer for new fans to explore his large discography and repertoire, and comes easily recommended.
