Seeing as Junie chose to leave the Ohio Players and stay with Westbound to record his solo debut, one can only imagine that a man this creative couldn’t be reigned in by the desires of a major label. What he delivered at the dawn of 1975 with What We Do bears that theory out. Disco-fied strings mix with blazing fuzz guitar solos and international rhythms that sit side-by-side with some art rock moves that would indicate Junie was checking out some of the 70s more experimental musicians such as David Bowie. The result is an all-time classic of funk by one of the world’s most unique musicians.
