An unofficial re-issue of an album recorded in 1956 at RCA Studios in Chicago, Sun Ra’s Super Sonic Jazz stands as a pivotal moment in his early catalogue. Later reissued as Super Sonic Sounds—a phrase already emblazoned across the original LP’s back cover—the album captures the embryonic stages of a singular musical vision. More significantly, it was the first release on El Saturn, the artist-run label founded by Sun Ra and Alton Abraham. Active from the mid-1950s through the early 1960s, El Saturn became one of the most prolific and forward-thinking independent operations of its time. Alongside artist-owned ventures such as Debut and Gate 5, the label helped establish a blueprint for creative autonomy that would echo far beyond jazz, reshaping how artists could record, release, and control their own work
