Five years ago, G.D.E., aka Robin 12Tree and Bongo Koi, embarked on an unforgettable road trip in a battered silver Mercedes filled with instruments and disco lights. Setting off from London, their mission was to explore and celebrate the diverse music of The Gambia, a place that had captured their hearts during a school exchange 25 years prior.
Each mile was a new adventure, marked by spontaneous jam sessions with local artists and impromptu recording opportunities. The highlight came when they met Rev. Joseph N’Gole, a Gambian mystic, on the banks of the River Gambia. His captivating vocals infused their A-side track, “Enlightenment Is Now,” with a deep spiritual resonance.
