Following the massive, genre-bending success of his Grammy-winning Black Radio albums, visionary pianist Robert Glasper returned to his acoustic jazz roots with 2015's Covered. Reuniting with his original acoustic trio bassist Vicente Archer and drummer Damion Reid. Glasper recorded the album live in front of an intimate audience at the legendary Capitol Studios in Hollywood. Rather than relying on traditional Jazz standards, the trio brilliantly reimagines a vibrant, eclectic mix of contemporary R&B, Hip-Hop, and Alternative tracks. The album seamlessly translates the grooves and melodies of artists like Kendrick Lamar, Radiohead, John Legend, and Joni Mitchell into the acoustic jazz trio format, proving that Glasper’s innovative, Hip-Hop-infused jazz sensibilities remain just as powerful when stripped down to the piano, bass, and drums.
