As the prime mover in creating the Philadelphia sound, Thom Bell was one of the most influential figures in the history of R&B and soul music. He didn't lack confidence and, with orchestral pop arrangers Burt Bacharach and Teddy Randazzo as guides, used ornate, highly unusual instrumentation - French horns, chimes, oboes - predicting a sound that would boss 70's soul.
